Cine es la palabra que resume y define el principal objetivo que tuvo la edición 51 del FICCI el año pasado: calidad en la selección y proyección de las películas, re-estructuración de las diferentes categorías de la programación, definición de un perfil claro para dichas categorías y un compromiso con el fortalecimiento de la competencia de Cine Colombiano.

Para edición del 2012, la número 52, la palabra clave es infraestructura. Este año el esfuerzo en el cual estamos trabajando concierne no solo a la infraestructura física del Festival sino también a la conformación del equipo del certamen. El Teatro Adolfo Mejía se convirtió en el 2011 en una sala de cine con los más altos estándares de calidad. Nos hemos enfocado ahora en el resto de los espacios del Casco Histórico, el corazón físico del Festival. El Centro de Convenciones llegará completamente renovado, con cambio de pantalla y proyectores de 35mm, además de un nuevo sistema de sonido. Para poder dar el tratamiento debido a los documentales, que este año probablemente conforman la Competencia Oficial Documental más sólida del Festival en toda su historia, el FICCI montará una sala digital profesional en el Palacio de la Inquisición. Finalmente, el Festival potenciará al máximo el glorioso e incomparable escenario de la ciudad, montando digitalmente 4 proyecciones en gran formato y óptima calidad de sonido e imagen para más de 8000 personas. Estas funciones de gran producción al aire libre conformarán el apartado Cine Bajo Las Estrellas. Pasaremos de haber tenido en el 2011 un máximo de 10% de nuestras proyecciones en formato digital, a más de 50% este año. Esto no solo nos permite estar al frente de los avances tecnológicos en la industria, sino además, programar películas tan nuevas que todavía no han tenido tiempo de transferirse a 35mm. Este es el caso de varias de las obras de la Competencia Oficial de Ficción, pero sobretodo de la gran mayoría de las películas colombianas, que serán todos estrenos nacionales y también, en un alto porcentaje, estrenos mundiales.

Hemos priorizado, en cuanto a tiempo y presupuesto, la búsqueda de las mejores personas con quienes creemos que se puede construir la infraestructura humana que el FICCI requiere. La consolidación de un equipo profesional, talentoso y ante todo, enamorado del Festival es, en pocas palabras, la razón por la cual este evento se puede llevar a cabo en los términos en que lo estamos anunciando. Si logramos cumplir con las expectativas, los aplausos y agradecimientos serán todos para ese equipo.

La cosecha de cine del 2011 y lo que llevamos del 2012 ha traído varias obras que permanecerán en la memoria de los cinéfilos y estamos orgullosos de poder contar con ellas en nuestro programa. Las podrán descubrir a través de nuestras diferentes secciones, las cuales, cabe anotar, mantienen el perfil que delineamos en la edición del FICCI 51.

Algunas renovaciones en la programación incluyen el hecho de que este año no tendremos País Invitado. Hemos querido, a cambio, hacer dos homenajes extensos y específicos con los cuales profundizamos en dos temas particulares. Por un lado, en colaboración con la Delegación de Gobierno Vasco para Colombia, rendimos un homenaje al Festival de Cine de San Sebastián en sus 60 años, proyectando las películas ganadoras de la Concha de Oro en la última década. Tendremos también el honor y privilegio de celebrar con un Tributo a la actriz, directora, productora y escritora Isabella Rossellini, artista polifacética y apasionada quien dentro y fuera de la pantalla es una figura que toma riesgos e inspira. Como actriz, Rossellini ha trabajado con muchos de los mas reconocidos directores en papeles complejos y desafiantes. Estaremos repasando algunas de éstas interpretaciones y además, las películas divertidas, genuinas y de enorme valentía, dirigidas y escritas por Isabella, películas inéditas en Colombia.

El Festival está imperdible, tenemos una selección de primer nivel, las salas en las mejores condiciones y la oportunidad de tener a los directores de la gran mayoría de estas películas, además de grandes personajes del cine para compartir de primera mano sus experiencias. Hemos abierto las puertas de nuestras salas del centro histórico para que todos, sin costo alguno, puedan disfrutar de esta oferta cinematográfica sin precedentes. El FICCI será en su gran mayoría gratis. Estamos convencidos de que el público compartirá nuestro entusiasmo. Primero cine, ahora infraestructura y por siempre nuestro objetivo será el público. Es lo que cada vez hará mas grande a Cartagena y a su festival de cine, cine para todos.

Whereas cinema was the watchword of the 51st edition of FICCI – with a focus on the quality of the films selected and screened, the restructuring and redefining of the various competition categories, and a commitment to promoting Colombian productions in general– this year's watchword is infrastructure.

For this 52nd edition of the festival, we have made a concerted effort to improve both our physical and human infrastructure. Following the transformation of the Adolfo Mejía Theater into a world-class movie theater in 2011, this year we have turned our attention to other venues in Cartagena's Historic Center, which is the heart and soul of FICCI. The Convention Center has been fully renovated, complete with a new screen, 35mm projectors and a new sound system. Contenders in what has shaped up to be the most exciting documentary competition to date, will see their films screened in a professional digital theater at the Palacio de la Inquisición. We will also transform one of our "plazas" in the heart of Cartagena's beautiful Historic Center, into an open-air "Cinema Under the Stars", where four large-format digitized films will screen with impeccable quality to 8,000-strong audiences. On this note, over half of the films screened will be in digital format, compared with only 10% in 2011, proving that we are at the forefront of the industry in terms of technology. More importantly, it allows us to show films completed so recently they haven't yet been transferred to 35mm. Such is the case in several of the features competing in the Fiction Competition and the vast majority of the Colombian films selected, all of which will be enjoying their national, and a good many their world, premieres.

We have given priority as well to building the human infrastructure that the Festival demands. We are honored and inspired by the outstanding team of talented professionals that we have assembled, and who now hold the festival close to their hearts. If we succeed in meeting your expectations, it'll be thanks to them.

The last year's crop of films includes some remarkable works that will without doubt join the canon of great cinema, and we are proud to have them as part of our program..

While the various sections of the festival retain the profile delineated in the last edition, this year FICCI will not feature a guest country. Instead, with the cooperation of the Colombian Delegation of the Government of the Basque Country, we will be paying homage to the 60th anniversary of the San Sebastián Film Festival by showing the films that have won the Golden Shell over the last decade. We will also be paying tribute to Isabella Rossellini, a prolific and passionate artist, and a courageous and inspiring figure both on and off the screen. Rossellini is an actress known for taking on complex and challenging roles, and having worked with many of the world's top directors. In addition to revisiting some of her memorable big-screen performances, audiences at FICCI can also enjoy a selection of bold, highly entertaining films written, produced and directed by Rossellini herself, which have never before been shown in Colombia.

Our vision for FICCI is to create a celebration of cinema that can be enjoyed by all. This year's Festival is unmissable: combining a first rate program, theaters in the best possible conditions, and the opportunity to meet and talk with the directors of most of the films, and several high profile film personalities. In celebration of our vision, this year we have thrown open the doors of our theaters in the Old City so that everyone, without charge, can take advantage of this unprecedented cinematic event. This year, most of FICCI will be free. We eagerly look forward to sharing our vision and enthusiasm with visitors and local residents of Cartagena: First cinema, now infrastructure, and always the audience. Because Cartagena, and its festival, should be enjoyed by everyone.
